VIETNAM

In my South East Asia trip,Vietnam wasn't part of the original list but became one after I looked at the map and saw unresolved issues I had over the Franco-American war there. As a child I saw the images - both here with draft card burners and there with napalm, helicopters, burning children and soldiers.

I thought about Saigon, but wondered how "pure" it would be in flavor. Hanoi, for Tet, would be the destination. I would figure out what was there when I got there - as I've done a lot on my travels.

I love ancient architecture -archaeology is another hobby. The Mayan ruins of Palenque, Maxico first brought me into a real connection with being one with the universe. Archaeology, for me, is not only about the past but also what it can tell us about our possible futures.

Halong Bay, on the way to Cat Ba island. This was purely about the journey - not the destination

I love the attention to detail.

To the north, near the Chinese border, time seems to stand still and makes me wonder about what is really important in life. It's where I reflected and saw how much of the yin and yang of my life is about stimulation and overstimulation.

The hardest thing for me in taking these photographs was keeping out of it. It was about letting the life flow and discretely take it all in from afar - not touching the delicate art, "national treasures" the Viets called them- and leaving smudgy fingerprints.
